Welcome to the premier issue of Linux Magazine. Normally, this section of the magazine will contain your letters to us. As you can probably guess, we haven’t received many letters yet, so we decided to use this opportunity to write a letter to you.
LM is all about one thing: helping the Linux community grow. These are interesting and challenging times for Linux. On the one hand, our OS is finally getting the recognition it deserves. This is raising the profile of everyone from the hackers working on the kernel to the commercial Linux hardware and software vendors. This can only be a Good Thing for the community as a whole.
On the other hand, we are now starting to see a lot of major players in the computer industry take a strong interest in Linux. Companies from Compaq to Dell and Hewlett Packard to IBM are all making substantial commitments to Linux-based strategies. This represents both an enormous validation of the hard work many people have been doing for the past several years, and a substantial challenge to many of the smaller companies.
We at LM have been speaking to many of these larger players for the past several weeks….
