Intro
The Linus Interview: (l-r) Editor Adam Goodman, Linus Torvalds, and
editor Matt Welsh at Transmetta.

Welcome to the premier issue of Linux Magazine. Normally, this section of
the magazine will contain your letters to us. As you can probably guess, we haven’t received many
letters yet, so we decided to use this opportunity to write a letter to you.

LM is all about one thing: helping the Linux community grow. These are interesting and
challenging times for Linux. On the one hand, our OS is finally getting the recognition it deserves.
This is raising the profile of everyone from the hackers working on the kernel to the commercial
Linux hardware and software vendors. This can only be a Good Thing for the community as a whole.

On the other hand, we are now starting to see a lot of major players in the computer industry
take a strong interest in Linux. Companies from Compaq to Dell and Hewlett Packard to IBM are all
making substantial commitments to Linux-based strategies. This represents both an enormous
validation of the hard work many people have been doing for the past several years, and a
substantial challenge to many of the smaller companies.

We at LM have been speaking to many of these larger players for the past several weeks.
One thing we have noticed is that the Linux people at most of the larger companies don’t usually act
like “corporate types”. They seem to be in small, nimble groups that are pushing Linux adoption
throughout their companies.

Message to the little guys: Don’t underestimate the big guys. They seem to be putting a real
effort behind their Linux activities. Message to the big guys: Don’t underestimate the little guys.
They know Linux better than almost anyone else, and they have years of experience giving Linux
customers what they want.

That brings us to what we here at LM want. We want to hear from you.

We are trying our hardest to create a magazine that covers both the technical and the commercial
aspects of Linux and Open Source software.

We need your feedback to tell us what we’re doing well, and what we’re doing wrong. Also, please
feel free to send us your ideas for articles. If you don’t tell us what you want in here, we will
only be able to guess :). Please send your suggestions or ideas to editors@linux-mag.com, or visit
our web site at www.linux-mag.com.

I’d like to thank the people who worked so hard to bring you this magazine. I’d also like to
thank Linus Torvalds, who took the time out to grant us a terrific interview.

Lastly, I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read Linux Magazine. I hope you
decide to join us in the months to come as we “Chronicle the Revolution”.
