The Register has reported that a Japanese website, PCWatch, is claiming that AMD will announce their first quad-core processors, codenamed ‘4×4′ now dubbed Quad FX, as soon as today.

Nothing in the PCWatch report seems to have been confirmed yet, however it claims to have demoed the Quad FX processors, which come in four flavors:

  • FX-70 (2.6GHz) $599
  • FX-72 (2.8GHz) $799
  • FX-74 (3.0GHz) $999

It’s probably best to be a bit skeptical at this point. Either this was a leak of a pending world-wide launch months ahead of schedule or something may have been lost in translation.

Intel, which launched their quad-core processors just weeks ago, currently has no competition above two cores. However, that didn’t stop the chip vendor from cutting prices on their Core 2 Extreme family just before the Thanksgiving holiday.
