Teradactyl Releases Synthetic Partial Cumulative Incremental Backup

This technology is now available in the Full Version of the True incremental Backup System(R) (TiBS) beginning immediately.

PCI Backups are created by synthetically consolidating file changes from higher level backups. Their ability to maintain multiple levels of backup without having to consolidate data at the current backup level is the key advantage over commonly available Cumulative Incremental (CI) backups. PCI Backups are typically much smaller than CI Backups, allowing for increased near line storage of backups, faster synthetic backup consolidation, improved efficiencies in backup hardware, and faster average restore times.

PCI Backups were developed in conjunction with the TiBS Disk Library Interface and can now be used as a replacement for CI Backups on a Full Version server. Since both types of backups are produced synthetically, no client or network interaction is required. Thus, the advantages of PCI Backups pertain primarily to the costs and performance issues associated with backup server hardware and related disk and tape storage.

PCI Backups remove file redundancy. By segmenting the backup time at each backup level, PCI Backups store only one copy of each file version at any given backup level. Cumulative Incremental Backups may contain many copies of the same file version at any given level. The smaller size of PCI Backups depends on multiple factors including rate of live data change, number of backups taken at each level and the ration of new to changed data in each backup. Over an initial range of sites that have implemented this new type of backup, PCI Backups have been measured to be 2 to 5 times smaller than their previously implemented CI Backup counterparts.

TiBS patented technology, TeraMerge(R), enables both multiple level and multiple volume synthetic backup consolidation. Perpetual True incremental network backups are consolidated in a variety of configurable fashions to meet the desired balance of cost versus performance, data granularity, and expedient restore times. TiBS scales backup operations with low impact on network and client resources while providing disk and tape verification and repair to protect restore integrity.

TiBS is an advanced software package that provides centralized backup of computer data for large distributed computing environments. TiBS supports operating system clients for AIX, Digital UNIX, FreeBSD, HP-UX, IRIX, Linux, MacOSX, NetBSD, Solaris, Windows. TiBS also supports network file systems including AFS, OpenAFS, and NFS. TiBS has no per seat charges.
