SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Brocade(R) (Nasdaq: BRCD), a leader in data center networking solutions that help enterprises connect and manage their information, today announced that the Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche (Lutheran Church) in Bavaria (ELKB) is utilizing Brocade StorageX(R) at its data center in Munich to help consolidate and manage its file-based information. Brocade StorageX, which leverages and extends Microsoft Distributed File System (DFS), enables the church to virtualize its large quantity of file-based data, and to greatly simplify file data management tasks across all of its storage systems and locations. As a result, the church benefits from improved file data protection; centralized management of remote site data; and improved data reliability and availability.

By leveraging Microsoft DFS, Brocade StorageX file virtualization services provide a logical view of data, decoupling file paths from their physical storage locations. As a result, end users no longer need to be concerned about where their data physically resides, and IT administrators are free to move and manage data without impacting end-user access.

Following the fast Brocade StorageX installation and setup, ELKB IT administrators utilized storage replication policies to replicate all file data from the church's remote offices to its data center in Munich. This data protection process ran completely in the background, and was unnoticed by users. By copying remote site data to the data center, the administrators were then able to centralize remote site file data backups, greatly improving the reliability and efficiency of the backups.

Previously, remote site backups were conducted daily to a central data center over T1 network lines. The big drawback to this approach was that employees had very little bandwidth remaining for normal data traffic because of the huge amount of data being backed up each day. The Brocade StorageX byte-level file differential replication feature enables the church to further reduce network bandwidth consumption by replicating only byte-level changes to files. This feature can reduce the amount of data transferred over the network and the amount of bandwidth utilized by up to 90 percent.

Additionally, by implementing Brocade StorageX, the ELKB has a more reliable disaster recovery and business continuity strategy in place. Now, in the event of a remote site server failure or planned outage, Brocade StorageX failover policies rapidly and transparently fail users over to the replicated copy of their data located in the ELKB data center. Brocade StorageX failover policies provide business continuity by reconnecting users to their data in a matter of minutes, versus hours or days, following an outage.

"The ELKB has invested wisely in the Brocade StorageX solution," said Ralf Trossman, Deacon and associated head of Data Processing (K-I-V) at the Lutheran Church in Bavaria. "The product has provided tremendous data administration efficiencies, and we have come to realize that this is absolutely the only way we can handle file data management and protection in our distributed IT environment."
