ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ — Avineon, Inc., a successful provider of IT, engineering, geospatial and program management services, announces its award of an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ), multiple-award contract with the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center (FNMOC). Responsibilities will include IT engineering maintenance and sustainment of current existing operational capabilities in addition to exploring technology to support future defense initiatives. Under this prime contract, Avineon is prepared to support a wide variety of activities including data analysis, open source Web development and open source geographic information systems.

FNMOC serves as the Navy's meteorological and oceanographic data collection center. It compiles and analyzes information on weather and ocean conditions to make predictions that increase the safety of forces and optimize the use of platforms, weapons, sensors and facilities anywhere and at anytime. FNMOC is an internationally recognized operational center for global and regional atmospheric models.

"Avineon brings a wealth of technical and domain expertise to FNMOC gained from a successful history in working with the Navy," stated Scott Starsman, director, defense systems for Avineon. "This contract will enable the Navy to enhance its worldwide meteorology and oceanography support of U.S. forces around the world."

Avineon has previously supported FNMOC as a subcontractor under Triad Enterprises, Inc. In its earlier work, the company developed an open source, Web-based tool to report tropical cyclone activity. The tool integrated data from FNMOC, satellite visual and infrared weather imagery. Avineon's tropical cyclone work helps identify the geographic location of storms to predict areas where a cyclone might hit, alerting ships to evacuate and allowing for quicker response time in delivering humanitarian aid after a storm.

"Avineon was able to rapidly respond to an emergent need for skilled development talent supporting FNMOC at its operations center in Monterey, California," stated Earle Kirkley, president of Triad Enterprises, Inc. "Avineon leveraged its existing base of Web service expertise and quality developers to quickly learn the advanced technologies in use at FNMOC and provide superb support."

Avineon's pending work will expand on existing capabilities and provide meteorological and oceanographic information to assist military commands in tactical, operational and strategic planning. Submarines heavily use oceanographic data to hide below layers of temperature in the water. Naval forces can use oceanographic products to determine ocean temperatures and predict where enemy submarines are positioned to avoid being detected.
