CUPERTINO, Calif., Feb. 11 /PRNewswire/ — Nexenta Systems, Inc., announced the availability of NexentaCore 1.0, an open source operating system delivering the power of an OpenSolaris kernel and the ease of use of Linux. NexentaCore features transactional upgrades utilizing ZFS, a GNU application user land, Debian packaging, and other capabilities that make it an ideal choice for developers and enterprises seeking a solid and easy to use server for their applications.

Phillip Steinbachs, of the Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics at Indiana University, said: "I have been running NexentaCore in production since 2006 and now run over 40 systems with NexentaCore. Anyone that looked at OpenSolaris in the past and shunned it or thought it too complicated should give Nexenta a try. The Nexenta developers have masterfully crafted an OpenSolaris based distribution that merges the stability and reliability of the OpenSolaris kernel with Debian based package management and GNU userland. The combination of OpenSolaris (with ZFS, Dtrace, Zones, xVM (xen), iSCSI, in- kernel CIFS, etc.), bulletproof and pain-free OS updates via apt-clone/ZFS transactional upgrades, and simplified package management, makes NexentaCore 1.0 the holy grail."

NexentaCore is especially well suited to serve as a platform for application distributions due to NexentaBuilder 1.0, an open source packaging solution included as part of NexentaCore that enables the simple creation of 'software appliances', which are software distributions that have been optimized for the broadest possible hardware and virtual machine compatibility and for ongoing support and upgrades.

CEO of Nexenta, Evan Powell, said: "The Nexenta community is strong and getting stronger and we're very happy to announce the release NexentaCore 1.0 which is the result of over two years of work by developers and many thousands of users all over the world. NexentaCore is intended to be a platform for other distributions from the Nexenta community, such as virtualization or desktop distributions as well as storage solutions such as our own NexentaStor. Working with the community we decided it was time to officially complete a 1.0 release. Thank you to everyone who worked on this release."

NexentaCore 1.0 is an open source solution and is freely available for users and developers at www.nexenta.org .
