I am really amazed that more companies and people have not been contributing code to Samba4. When one looks at the potential benefits to the OSS community there is a big return for allocating people to contribute to the Samba4 project.

I loved the idea that you had to to do a brute force attack on the DES encryption of a fixed string... and then had to publicise what the string was! (and yes I know it has to be in the source, but few look there...).

Next time (eg Windows 7) I'm sure it might now be longer and have a hidden message for you, such as 10 concatenations of "Eat s_it and die"...

Starting over again with a (mostly) new code base is a brave and risky thing to do for the Samba4 team. It breaks a LOT of things in the short term, but hopefully gives you a much more solid base for development in the future.

I'm curious how much the Samba team has been able to use the documentation that MS was supposed to provide for the EU regarding its network protocols. I remember that was a hard won battle, but I haven't heard if MS ever came through on their requirement to document the protocols, or if that documentation was useful for the Samba team.
