SEATTLE, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Isilon(R) Systems (Nasdaq: ISLN), the leader in clustered storage, today announced the release of Accelerator-x, ushering in unmatched performance for the most demanding file-based applications and workflows in the enterprise. Combining Isilon's new OneFS(R) 5.0 operating system software (see separate press release) with 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) networking, dual quad core Intel processors and 32 Gigabytes of cache, the Accelerator-x delivers an unprecedented 400MBps of single stream performance and 700MBps of concurrent performance from a single node. Enterprise customers can seamlessly add the Accelerator-x to an Isilon cluster, turbo-charging total system performance up to 20GBps of aggregate throughput.

"The enterprise data center is in the midst of a major transformation, fueled by the wide-spread deployment of high-speed networking, high- performance virtualized computing and the rapid growth of file-based data," said Sam Grocott, Senior Director of Product Management, Isilon Systems. "The Accelerator-x shatters the performance and cost barriers of traditional NAS file storage, enabling enterprises to unlock the storage bottleneck and speed the entire data center value chain to achieve new levels of innovation and business agility."

"At FotoKem, we've been using Isilon clustered storage to power our leading-edge post production services since the product's first generation and it has delivered a competitive advantage that only increases with each successive release," said Bill Schultz, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Digital Film Services, FotoKem. "Our digital intermediate workflow demands extreme system performance and rock solid reliability. The Accelerator-x is by far the fastest Isilon product we've used, while Isilon technology has already proven its reliability during years of use in our facility. Taken together, we had a very easy purchasing decision indeed."

To provide seamless integration into the next-generation data center, Isilon today announced that the Accelerator-x is interoperable with leading 10 GbE networking solutions from Force10 Networks, Fujitsu and Chelsio (see separate press release).

"There is no doubt that next-generation data centers are staring down tremendous growth of file-based data. CIOs and administrators increasingly will expect storage solutions to provide ample performance to address these growing requirements," said Brad Nisbet, Research Manager, IDC Storage Systems. "Suppliers, such as Isilon, that push the envelope and leverage the latest processor and networking technologies, will enable organizations to stay ahead of the curve."

"We are seeing increasing demand from our customers for storage systems with the high performance necessary to power data-intensive, next-generation workflows," said Tom Shearer, Principal, Talon Data Systems. "Isilon's unique ability to scale performance and capacity both linearly and independently has always made it a unique and compelling solution for our clients. However, with the Accelerator-x, Isilon has taken storage system performance to new heights and delivered an unmatched solution for businesses looking to advance workflow productivity while reducing IT cost and complexity."

With the release of the Accelerator-x, Isilon is extending the performance frontier of file-based storage. Utilizing Isilon's new OneFS 5.0 operating system software with symmetric multiprocessing technology in combination with dual quad core Intel processors and high-speed 10 GbE networking, the Accelerator-x delivers an unprecedented 400MBps of single stream performance and 700MBps of concurrent performance and from a single node. The Accelerator-x can deliver a SPEC SFS score of more than 26,000 IOPS from a single node. Priced at a third of the cost of a traditional NAS filer head, the Accelerator-x also offers unmatched price performance in the storage industry. The Accelerator-x can be seamlessly added to an existing Isilon clustered in under 15 seconds, eliminating the cost, complexity and risks of downtime associated with scaling performance with traditional NAS and SAN network storage systems.

Powered by OneFS, Isilon IQ X-Series delivers the industry's first single file system that unifies and provides instant and ubiquitous access to the rapidly growing stores of file-based data, setting the standard for scale out file storage. OneFS is a unified operating system software layer that powers all of Isilon's award-winning IQ family of clustered storage systems including the Isilon IQ 1920, 3000, 6000, 9000, 12000, Accelerator-x, and EX 6000, 9000 and 12000.
