CHICAGO, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ — Cleversafe Inc., the leading provider of Dispersed Storage(TM) technology, announced today that the Wall Street Journal has awarded the company with a 2008 Innovation Award in the Software category for its innovative approach to storing and archiving digital content.
The nature of data storage is changing from smaller files and structured applications to larger, digital content, media and imaging. By 2010, 85% of all bits transmitted over the Internet will be content and media, which points to the need for storage that can handle massive amounts of unstructured data. Traditional storage backup and archiving approaches that rely on redundant copies are difficult and expensive to adequately scale, secure, and handle massive data growth over extended periods of time.
Cleversafe's technology avoids the inefficiency of replication by dividing data into "slices" using Information Dispersal Algorithms and dispersing those slices, via secure network connections, to multiple storage nodes on a Dispersed Storage Network (dsNet). Each individual slice contains too little information to be useful, but any threshold of the slices can be used to perfectly recreate the original data. Moreover, the sum capacity of all the slices is significantly less than maintaining multiple copies of the original data.
"Our mission is to ease the pain of enterprises that are faced with a mind-boggling amount of structured and unstructured data and until now haven't had an effective way of managing and storing it all," said Chris Gladwin, president and CEO of Cleversafe. "Our vision has already been accepted by Fortune 50-level enterprises in a variety of industries as well as by our partners, who are delivering dispersed storage as a service to their end-user customers. This recognition by the Wall Street Journal underscores our commitment to spearheading the evolution of storage technology to keep pace with data growth."
The annual Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Awards, in its eighth year, reward companies have separated themselves from the pack and have demonstrated technological breakthroughs in conventional processes in areas including medicine, software, the Internet, wireless and consumer electronics.
This year, the Wall Street Journal received over 700 entries. 162 finalists were reviewed by a panel of judges, and only 19 winners were selected.
