WMWare has expected this for a long time. They've already been competing with free Xen - Oracle and Sun both offer it. VMWare server is free, and ESXi is essentially free.

VMWare and others have known that virtualization will become just another checkbox item. The profit will come from enterprise customers, both in terms of paid support, and the sophisticated ecosystem of tools build around the base product.

When Xen (or OracleVM or SunVM, or HyperV, or ...) starts to offer tools like Site Recovery Manager or Vmotion or Platespin VWWare can worry. Those tools may or may not be coming soon, but the entry of MS into the market will surely bring developers in this space.

XenServer Enterprise has an equivalent to VMotion called XenMotion.
And it's being included for free. Platespin is not included with the VMware Enterprise offering, neither is Site Recovery Manager, VMware SRM is a separate product.

XenServer's answer to disaster recovery is: replicated storage and metadata backup.
tinyurl.com/bs27b7

I'm not saying VMware SRM is useless, but it's only part of the puzzle in any case.

There are third-party management options available for XenServer that provide capabilities suitably equivalent to VMware SRM.
