This article is very interesting. There has been a lot of talk about how Oracle would "suck all the life out of MySQL", unless someone forks the development in order to create an alternative development path.

This article tells me that, at least at some level, several of these forks have already occurred. In some ways, the Sun/MySQL line is the predominant path forward, but if Oracle really does become a major obstacle to the development of MySQL (something that I'm still not convinced will happen), then there are other paths that people can follow. There is such a huge installed base of MySQL out there that I can't see how any commercial company could stop it (short of the bumbling mismanagement of Sun).

Personally, I'm more of a PostgreSQL user, but I still wish the best to the MySQL "Team", no matter who they get their paycheck from!

@ctryon:

Yeah, Monty, Percona, and others are working to make sure that folks who want to contribute to the continued development of MySQL can do so and make a living. And, best of all, they're keeping it Open Source.

I am glad to see that there are still efforts to make MySQL a much more competitive project. Still waiting to see what Oracle will treat it like (gift or garbage).
