I agree - I don\'t like hauling around a Dell laptop and a macbook in my backpack. I can say this - vmware fusion on macos seems pretty stable. With that you could run multiple environments and have the required mac world. A linux based simulator for iphone would be interesting.

I found this article frustrating. I thought, upon seeing the title in my e-mail inbox, that the article would be about an open source recipe for developing for the iPhone. Instead I found an article that told me to buy a Mac as the core of the recipe for developing for the iPhone. Oh yeah, the author did mentioned something about an open source game development framework, but I\'m not really sure how this alleviates the problem of the the completely closed, boarded-up, locked-down, $2000-to-own, 900lb gorilla of a Mac that sits in the middle of all this.

You should\'ve just written an article for Sapus Media (not that that\'s a bad thing in and of itself) and left out the \'iPhone\" buzzwords. Boo.

First, thanks for your feedback. I too am frustrated with having to buy a \"900lb gorilla\" of a machine to work on the platform - however, I am more frustrated with the fact that many of my clients have quit asking for Palm/WinMob/BlackBerry applications and they want to know if I can help them with an iPhone application. So I learned about iPhone. And that came with a Mac. I didn\'t make the rules, just learning to navigate this world. That said, I take to heart what you said and will look to bring some more open source materials to iPhone for this column.

By the way, we are going to be releasing a developer survey in the near future and your feedback would be very much appreciated -- it will help drive the direction for future content.
