I can\'t imagine why anyone would go to this trouble when there are perfectly good Android devices out there, and the MeeGo project is looking for developers. It seems like a total waste of time and talent, and is probably opening the participants up to a lawsuit from Apple.

The world appears to be full of talented technical people with *zero* business sense, and this strikes me as a collection of them. What *real* problem does an Android iPad solve for *real* people with money to spend? Who is going to *sell* what to whom here?

The fact that Apple has sold over 1 million iPads does not mean that there is a market for tablet devices. What it does mean is that Apple has found over 1 million people with money burning a hole in their pockets.

Personally, I am waiting for a Linux based device which I expect will be at least as good.

@znmeb
I agree that the business prospects of this effort seem questionable on the surface, however watching some of the (reverse) engineering work going on is of interest. For example, have a look at the most recent update from their blog:

http://linuxoniphone.blogspot.com/2010/05/creating-wm8991-driver.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+LinuxOnTheIphone+%28Linux+on+the+iPhone%29

@sfarber53
Hopefully a linux based device will be available.. however to be successful it must approach or exceeed Apple\'s user experience and have lots of content. No content - no sales.

@emlynoregan

Thanks for the head\'s up on those devices -- I think I had seen them a while ago. My chinese is pretty rough at present and while I might be tempted to drop $164 + shipping on them.... I don\'t consider it worth the coin.

They do it just to prove that they can and, I imagine, to prove to apple that closed architecture is not as closed as they would like it to be. I am very impressed.

For the price of the cheapest iPad I bought an entourage edge which is a dual screen android device. It has large eInk and color LCD displays. Everyone who sees it asks about it and then agrees it gives far more bang for the buck than the iPad. So, who cares about running Android on the iPad when better alternatives already run Android?

@kenjennings I hope entourage edge is a great device. But when I look at the ipad web page, it makes me want one. When I look at the entourage edge page, I want to laugh.
