It seems that Dell Studio 1747 has 2 different types of wifi mini-cards: Dell Wireless WLAN 1520 Half MiniCard Dell Wireless WLAN 1501 Half Mini-Card (4313bgn). Both can be supported in Linux.

First is b/g card. You can use this recipe: http://open--source.blogspot.com/2010/03/how-to-install-broadcom-bcm4312.html, if not already available in Ubuntu repos.

Second is a b/g/n. I think it is supported by the wl driver. It is supposed to be in Ubuntu repos. I am using in another brand lap.

create a file: /etc/modprobe.d/b43.conf

In that file put this line:
options b43 pio=1 qos=0

Reboot and good luck!

Faced with a similar problem with a Gateway laptop, I replaced the Marvel card with a supported Intel for $20 from ebay. Sometimes it is easier to bite the bullet.

The wl driver works great on my 1747.. the lucid install has wl as an out of the box option in jockey, aka "Hardware Drivers". I have been very pleased with the performance in linux, I also added a 80G G2 Intel SSD and a Seagate Momentus hybrid; having two drives is a great feature.

Also, Broadcom just open-sourced the drivers for the 4313, the code for the fully open brcm80211 drivers which are already in the kernel tree and will probably be in the next kernel revision in drivers/staging. More info here:

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/brcm80211

Code: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git;a=tree;f=drivers/staging/brcm80211
