Thank you for you for sharing! My company just made the Zimbra plunge (we are using the community edition with Z-push plus Zimbra Backend to provide mobile functionality). Many of my users are...less than satisfied with the desktop client. By which I mean I now listen to inner office delivers to make sure they are not ticking before I open them. Maybe your combo will work.

I just wish there was some hook or widget-or API whatcamacallit, for those stupid programs that cant access a web based email to send out a doc or a file, that want to default to Windows Outlook or Thunderbird. - If the program can call to and start an onboard email client, why cant I configure something that will call a web based email and send something out without needing local email clients?
I tried Zimbra for that purpose, but I hate local email so I uninstalled it.

@deserttaxguy

Is the problem you're having related to mailto: links on web pages?

If you're using Firefox and have Greasemonkey installed you might give this a try:

Not sure you can sensibly compare Zimbra Desktop to Gmail, bit like comparing Outlook to Gmail! Comparing Zimbra webclient to Gmail is fine, and for the author it may still end with Gmail victorious, but as it is it seems a very odd choice for comparison.

Zimbra Desktop is to Zimbra Server what Outlook is to Exchange except that it handles IMAP email better than Outlook.

One main reason for using Zimbra Desktop is to hold a local copy of your data for real mobile use where access to the net is not always guaranteed where you have to work. It syncs back to the web all your Zimbra activity and most of your IMAP so it isnt really 'local' email in the old sense at all but an 'offline' working copy.

Personally I find gmail a very lumpy interface and very limited, but that is why there is choice, horses for courses. Searches on Zimbra I find very powerful, especially saved searches and tagging.

The other reason I use ZD is to get an offline copy of otherwise online accounts so I can preserve emails as I see fit. The final reason is the ability to access many accounts even on the same service in one place. Like many I have different accounts for different roles and keeping them in one place rather than dozens of browser windows open is far more use to me!

We have been running Zimbra network edition internally for just over two years. Zimbra desktop does not satisfy our need for a desktop mail client replacement for Outlook as it can be slow, a bit buggy and until recently did not support internal proxy servers. We use Thunderbird with the Lightning and Zindus plug-ins instead and this combination is working well and our users prefer this over the Zimbra webmail interface.
