I have to agree with the author - Linux-Mint 10.0 is really polished. (That is once you get rid of the hideous Gnome panel and install Avant to replace it!)

bobwya: "That is once you get rid of the hideous Gnome panel and install Avant to replace it!"

That's funny. I'm a long-time user of Linux Mint (since v5), and I use Mac4Lin to give me a MacOS X look-and-feel, and both Gnome panel AND Avant Window Navigator are integral parts of my desktop pleasure.

As they say, "That's what makes horse races!

I am now using Mint on my own Dell Notebook and I have provided a slightly modified menu selection of Mint to customers that just want a "simpler" and "faster" computer to use. I have been around since the beginning of desktop operating systems i.e. Sun OS back in the 70's and I have never seen a more modifiable and easy to use desktop system than GNOME. I feel it is just an incredible desktop and if you don't like the way it is then modify it to your liking.

Do you realize that people do not even know you can remove or add more menus? I have taken the base Mint menu system (which I don't like for myself) and redefined it back to the default GNOME setup taking only about 15 minutes to do! AMAZING....... This version of Mint is wonderful and the best ever.

I downloaded and tried out LM 10 live DVD. LM 10 appears to be Ubuntu 10.10 with a new fur coat. I'm sorry, but I don't know what all the hoopla is about. It takes about 10 minutes to reconfigure Ubuntu 10.10's desktop to look any way you want. I installed the Mint menu on 10.10. Bit of a pig (takes a while to load when first logging in), but I really like the menu UI. I'll stick with Ubuntu and the Mint menu owing to the massive amount of documentation and support available.

I agree with comments made about the Unity desktop - tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 with it on one of my old P4's and couldn't get it to behave. Had to revert to Gnome desktop. Not sure how this is going to work out in 11.04. That release may end up as a VM ...

Been using linux since 1992 when it was first released. No GUI then. Had to use gopher, ftp, tin, etc. I've tried a lot of the distros and currently Ubuntu is the one I recommend to people wanting to switch from Windows. It has the best update / upgrade software and is easy for people to configure.
We'll see what happens with 11.04 and Unity ..

I had to get off the Mint wagon with great disappointment. Here we have an operating system with all the goodies to make a Windows user seriously consider switching; and that's exactly why I switched from Ubuntu: so I could support what I was attempting to push onto some brave new users.

The problem I ran into was the lack of community support. There seems not be the number of Mint users out there to help solve odd problems that my 3 monitor/2 graphics cards was giving me. I ran into a number of fixes that would work with ubuntu, and some that worked with Mint, including backing down the xorg version to Mint 9. Backing down a version of an x-server to a version that didn't fully work (screen saver caused a blip in display but wouldn't actually kick in).

I'd been dealing with this issue for a couple of months and I plainly got tired of it. I found that Ubuntu updated its repositories to take care of this problem, but the fix isn't in Mint, nor do I expect it to be because I hear of nobody complaining about running 3+ monitors with Xinerama under this platform; which has become a MAJOR complaint with the Ubuntu Community.

I am not abandoning Mint, but I have my concerns; enough to have a dual boot Mint/Ubuntu for my mindset; do I want to get stuff done, or do I want to tinker.

My experience has shown that windows users that have to be pried away from their mindless OS will need all of the functionality that windows offers, and yes that includes us that run 3,4,8,9 monitors! We may be damn few, but if windows can do it and Linux can't; I plainly can't convert someone over to the Force from the Dark Side.
