I'm a loyal Debian user on my desktop but have found that Mepis performs beautifully, and consistently, on laptops. It's closer to Debian, less resource intensive and, in my opinion, more stable than *buntu. Mepis sells itself by being easy to install and friendly to use. Great distro! Mepis runs beautifully on my old Dell Latitude (700 MHz, P3 w/256 MB of RAM).

I feel much the same way about Slitaz when it comes to older (under 600 MHz) hardware. It may feel slow on an AMD K6-2 450 but it runs, and very nicely too!

In a way, it is good that alphas and betas come out, as most are community run developments. When I think of the work the community does, say for example for CentOS and then RedHat simply takes the stuff and sell it to its enterprise customers...its somewhat strange.

When I think of date of release of many distros, it comes to my mind the times when USA and USSR was racing against each other to send some rocket up there. Only problem was while USA wast telling the whole world that its planning to shoot the rocket on such & such a day, but...but there are some minor problems to solve before it can be sent upwards...USSR? It sent one up there & told the world, remember?

Now, Putin's Russia is planning to come out with its own Open Source operating system. They won't come out with alphas/betas etc. They'd come out with ready to use OS for sure.

I know the Russians in Russia, so I believe that the Open Source operating system that will come out from Russia would be real treat!

There are private websites, where one can build one's distro on their server and download it as iso.

Have you noticed?

BTW, thanks for the above review!

While there have been a significant number of issues in the early test releases of SimplyMEPIS 11.0, I have personally found that the application software in the test releases has been every bit as solid as we've ever seen. The community and the development team are hard at work. A few people are concerned that they could lose some users if certain problems are not solved, but my history with the MEPIS project is that the system will work well for a solid number of platforms and the application software will be rock solid. I hope to carve out enough time to help review some of the documentation as one contribution to the effort, and I've been testing it and promoting it to others as my other contributions. I value this software enough to recommend it to others, even if it is not perfect in test form. It's pretty darn good, and if you do not have hardware compatibility issues, it'll work great; if you do, please report them and help make a great free software project even better.
