Nobody can touch my app for personal desktop search.

It can randomly play groupings of video audio pictures and text.

It can pick a random video (I have thousands) then play a short random segment from that clip. Without random you have nothing. Of course it can search and play the results as well.

see: nobody shares knowledge better than this.

Google Desktop doesn't even find all files! For instance, I have the "Superman (It's Not Easy)" .mp3 file on my desktop hard disk...GD doesn't find it. All fixed hard drives are supposedly indexed.

For Windows platforms, the only reliable search engine I've found is Agent Ransack. It doesn't keep indexes so the searching is slower (but not real slow) but it is thorough. You can also search inside files, by regexp (filename and contents), etc.

This is true, but of course the lack of real support is true of many of their products.

Google is no longer providing real support for Google Desktop. It no longer supports scanning Microsoft Outlook starting w/ Outlook 2010 b/c Microsoft's Windows 7 desktop search now prevails for all data types. If you haven't used Google Desktop until now, don't bother. And if you are using it and are Windows 7 or soon to be on Windows 7, abandon it.
I actually prefer Google Desktop to Windows 7 Search btw, but the realities of it are that Google is reigning in and focusing on products the generate revenue. Google Desktop isn't one of them.

I removed Google Desktop a year ago because it was a disk space hog. The indexes ended up being huge, growing out of control. I would try it again if it provided a way to limit the disk space allocated to indexes. Maybe the capability is there and I missed it. Please set me straight if that is the case. Thanks.

Can someone please comment on the open-source competitors on linux for Google Desktop? Contrary to what the author suggests, there *are* various tools that do almost then same thing and are not proprietary...
