I don’t recommend this as a way to avoid buying music, but it’s a good tool to have handy for tracks that you can’t find for purchase. For instance, live performances on YouTube that aren’t on album somewhere.<a href="http://www.bronxweddingphotography.com" rel="nofollow">wedding photo</a>

I'm extremely new to Linux/Unix. I read one book, and just started using GUI Linux OSs 2 years ago. But even I understand > and >>, especially when used with cat. Hate to bring up the enemy but similar to | with MS-_ _ _!

Command line always produces magical results when GUI gives you expected results. We are working as <a href="http://www.dbametrix.com" rel="nofollow">database dba</a> and we always use commandline instead of GUI because GUI grabs so much bandwidth which is not available in our country. We need to identify shell first to start any work of shell script or command execution. Recently I have read good article on our company's site about <a href="http://www.dbametrix.com/unix-shell.html" rel="nofollow">identify your shell</a>.

"touch" allows your script to error out in case the directory is read-only for your user rather than waiting for the user to enter some text then find out it errored out after a long input.

Hey listen, all of us started out somewhere and this small starter is as good a place as any. For all of you that can't "understand" that this can and is helpful to those that don't know... please look at all the comments that are grateful for this post. No it's not "magic" to some of us and hasn't been for 20+ years to fewer of us, but it is to new Linux users and new script writers. It is very much magic to them.

You may not like it but this simple part 1 has taught some things already:

1. The first line contains a line that determines what shell is used.
2. Commands run on the command line are written the same way in their script.
3. Variables can be created easily and values in them can be reused all through their script.
4. That they can redirect any output into a file.

However, that said I would like to add (for clearification) the following things to this tutorial:

1. The line #!/bin/bash is often called the "shabang" ('http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shebang_(Unix)') and can be any interpreter or shell (/usr/bin/perl, /bin/ksh, etc...)
2. Redirection using '>' or '>>' will overwrite (>) or append (>>).
3. Creating a variable in bash (and most shells) is done without the special character $, you only prepend the $ to the variable name when you want the shell to give you the value contained within the variable (MY_VAR="Some value"; echo "$MY_VAR").
4. Google is your friend, if you have questions there are literally millions of pages of answers found on google!

Well, for this article's target audience, maybe this one would be a better place to start,
http://tldp.org/LDP/Bash-Beginners-Guide/html/index.html

Good call linking to tldp (The Linux Documentation Project http://tldp.org/ ). It's been rather a while since I checked it out -- and it looks like the material is now being updated more regularly (for a while it was kind of lagging). I highly recommend it. It's a really great site for anyone able to study on their own, from newbie to guru.

Thank you, Mr. Hess. I wouldn't let what those naysayers rant on about dissuade me. This is a perfect primer for aspiring administrators. Everybody has to learn it from somewhere, and it looks like the user two up from my post is one of those who have benefited from it. As for the naysayers, my aunt had the perfect saying for you. You think your hot sh!t on a silver platter, yet I see a cold turd on a paper plate.

I liked it. I often have to check a book or website to remember exactly how to do this or that. But for someone who never has written a script this shows them how one might look and what could be accomplished.
