Hobbit is a great place to start monitoring. Opensource tools like Nagios (Much more robust and harder to configure) and Groundworks (A nagios front end and more) will do you much better in the long run.
Hobbit is by far the easiest to install and configure of the three I have mentioned. »
You can list the files in an rpm file by adding rpm -qpl "$1"
And don't forget the bz compression
tar -tjvf "$1"
